The 2019 Mirpur Earthquake

24th September 2019 at 16:02 local time, an earthquake hit the Mirpur District.

The 2019 earthquake struck regions of Pakistan with an epicentre in Azad Kashmir on 24th September at 16:02 local time. It had a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter Scale. There was severe damage in the Mirpur District causing the deaths of 40 people and injuring a further 850.

Midland Doctors® Trustee, Shafqat Hussain, was present at the affected epicentre Mirpur. Shafqat liaised with the Army, Mirpur City Administration, hospitals and other major support organisations, to assess the situation and plan appropriate earthquake relief work. He also immediately identified the urgent need for clean water as many of the villages were left without water due to collapsed water wells.

I was shocked by a tremendous earthquake and a strange loud noise due to the earth motion. I ran out of my house in Mirpur, frightened… The streets and roads were full of destruction and rubble.
Mr Shafqat Hussain

The Midland Doctors® Executive Team, in consultation with the local authority, decided to purchase 100 large water tanks and install them in the affected villages to provide clean drinking water. The water tanks were purchased and loaded onto Suzuki pickups and distributed to the worst affected villages under the supervision of Shafqat and the Mirpur Development Authority representatives.

Midland Doctors® also provided hundreds of crutches to help the injured and furthermore provided help with construction of houses for displaced families.
