The Paediatric & Nutrition Program

A key initiative to improve the health of children in the community.

Midland Doctors®, in partnership with the Angus Lawson Memorial Trust (ALMT) has initiated the Jordi O’Toole Children’s Ward, a Paediatric Emergency Assessment Unit. This caters to the many cases that require immediate medical attention and enables the assessment and treatment of children without admission. This unit focuses on treating children with Asthma, Pneumonia, Diarrhoea etc.
The MDMI MacBevan Nutrition Program, in partnership with CGC, has been instrumental in addressing the barriers and gaps to the paediatric health services at MDMI, and have developed a Nutrition Program to screen and treat children for malnutrition, and also create awareness amongst pregnant and lactating women about nutritional habits.

Our aim is to assist in improving the health conditions of the children of the region.
Dr Asrar Rashid

MDMI operate a children’s growth and nutrition clinic where the doctors and nurses have been trained on height and weight assessments using the Manchester STAMP (Screening Tool for the Assessment of Malnutrition in Paediatrics). STAMP is a validated nutrition screening tool for use in hospitalised children aged 2-16 years. It is a simple 5-step tool that was developed in the UK. MDMI is believed to be the only hospital in Pakistan using STAMP. During the month of July and August 2017, approximately 600 children were referred to the clinic where 10% were diagnosed as malnourished. These children were treated with dietary and nutritional supplements. A mother counselling session was also held to discuss the important topics of breastfeeding and weaning.

The STAMP initiative had now screened some 1600 children for malnutrition. We hope once we have analysed the data in more detail, we can then implement work on the ground to modify the pattern for preventing the risk of children developing malnutrition. If successful we hope this programme can be implemented across North Pakistan.

How can I help Midland Doctors®?

We are always in need of donations to help run our charity hospital in Muzaffarabad whilst also participating in many other charitable projects across the world. Of course, not all contributions are monetary. Your time and effort to help fundraise, manage and drive our organisation forward will always be welcomed and appreciated!
